Israel, May 09: A top Iranian legislator has warned about the Israeli-hatched plots to counter the restoration of ties between Iran and Egypt after 32 years.
Head of the Parliament (Majlis) National Security and Foreign Policy Commission Alaeddin Boroujerdi told Fars News Agency on Monday that Tehran-Cairo relations would move on its course.
“I must state here that various plots have been hatched in this regard but these efforts will be thwarted through the vigilance of authorities and with the vast potentials possessed by the Muslim nations of Iran and Egypt,”
Boroujerdi pointed to Israeli plots to obstruct efforts to establish relations between Iran and Egypt and said, “In my opinion we must not act hastily in restoring ties between the two brother countries of Iran and Egypt.”
The senior Iranian lawmaker stressed that the establishment of relations between Iran and Egypt would serve the interests of the Muslim world.
Boroujerdi also praised remarks by Head of Egypt’s ruling military council, Field Marshal Mohamed Hussein Tantawi, and Egyptian Foreign Minister Nabil Al-Arabi on Cairo’s eagerness to improve bilateral relations with Tehran.
In an interview published in The Washington Post on Saturday, Al-Arabi said Egypt is looking to improve relations with most countries in the world, including Iran.
In April, Tantawi lauded Iran’s excellent position in the Islamic world, and expressed hope that Tehran-Cairo relations would increase.
“We hope that the upcoming stage would be a stage of special bilateral relations with the Islamic Republic of Iran, serving the best of both countries,” he told German magazine Der Spiegel.
On Saturday, Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi reiterated the resolve of Iran and Egypt to reestablish their bilateral relations following the ouster of Hosni Mubarak.
“The two countries have expressed their explicit willingness and interest to resume ties,” Salehi said.
Salehi added that Iranian and Egyptian officials are holding talks to open a new page in their bilateral relations.
Iran and Egypt have not had diplomatic relations since 1980.
Iran severed ties with Egypt after Cairo signed the 1978 Camp David Accords with the Israeli regime and offered asylum to Iran’s deposed dictator, Mohammad-Reza Pahlavi.
