‘Israel a liability, not an asset for US’

Jerusalem, June 08: As the IAEA finally agrees to address Israel’s nuclear issue, analysts believe that the move is an achievement that will deter Israeli aggression.

In a Monday interview with Media, Franklin Lamb, an international lawyer in Beirut, believes that considering the substantial pressure from Washington for not looking into Israel’s nuclear issue, it is an important step for the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to have taken the matter into its own hands after 19 years and win credibility for itself.

With regard to the IAEA’s next step after this week’s meeting, Lamb says it is not possible to predict in advance what their declaration might be, but it is very likely that they are at least going to ask for transparency and an inventory of Israel’s nuclear weapons while they urge the country to join the NPT.

Although IAEA’s action is overdue Lamb contends that all the countries in the Middle East perceive Israel’s nuclear weapons as a threat and the fact that Israel is allowed to increase its territory upsets regional countries.

Lamb insists that the resistance against Israel’s nuclear arsenal is growing quickly and is broadening in terms of public support.

More importantly, the Americans are finally realizing that Israel is no longer a military asset and strategic ally, but it is a strategic liability.
