‘Israel killed 250 fighters during war’

Jerusalem, November 02: Israel killed 250 Palestinian resistance fighters during its December 2008-January 2009 war on Gaza, says the Palestinian resistance movement, Hamas.

Hamas’ Interior Minister Fathi Hamad said on Monday that “Israel targeted police headquarters and 250 martyrs fell and they were affiliated to Hamas and other factions,” the Palestinian Ma’an news agency reported.

The all-out land, aerial and naval bombardments, codenamed Operation Cast Lead, claimed the lives of more than 1,400 Palestinians, including over 900 civilians.

In September, Hamas said it had discovered an Israeli-commissioned network of spies and collaborators. The group said that the collaborators had a clear role during the operations. They would provide “the Israeli army with information about” Hamas fighters and their homes, which were targeted during the war, the group said.

Israeli officials have admitted to the occurrence of civilian fatalities during the offensives.

The United Nations fact-finding mission on the Gaza War, also known as the ‘Goldstone Report’ for its being headed by the respected South African jurist, Richard Goldstone, has accused Tel Aviv of committing war crimes and possible crimes against humanity during the war.

Those, the report holds, include the deliberate targeting of civilians. It also highlights the forces’ “systematically reckless” way of determining the use of white phosphorus in built-up areas.
