Israel investigates AG, Barak’s wife

Palestine, March 12: Israel’s Attorney General and the wife of Defense Minister Ehud Barak are under investigation for hiring illegal immigrants.

Nili Priel, Barak’s wife, admitted in October to hiring an illegal Filipina worker, Virginia, as a house cleaner. An indictment against Priel will be submitted to Tel Aviv’s Labor Court next week,

Attorney General Yehuda Weinstein had previously rejected a petition filed by the Legal Forum for the Land of Israel to the High Court of Justice against Priel and Barak last year.

Weinstein has chosen not to summon Barak for the investigation against his wife, citing insufficient evidence against him.

Their housekeeper had been working legally, but started to clean homes when her employment license expired. She was tracked down after police had started a search for her.

Weinstein and his wife are now under investigation for the same charges by the Population and Immigration Authority. The investigation claims that they had employed an illegal worker from India as a house cleaner, before Weinstein was appointed as Attorney General.

The immigrant who worked for Weinstein reportedly only held a permit for working in home nursing care.
