Israel to equip tanks with new anti-missile system

Jerusalem, August 07: The Israeli army is planning to upgrade its tanks with a new anti-missile system capable of intercepting incoming missiles, military officials say.

The system dubbed Trophy, an active protection system, uses radars to track incoming missiles and fires a projectile to explode missiles before they reach their target, AFP reported.

The system, which costs around $350,000 per unit, has been successfully test-fired and will be installed on the latest generation Merkava IV tanks, one of world’s strongest tanks.

Israel launched a 33-day war against Lebanon in 2006 but could not succeed in achieving the desired results. The massive attack was repelled after Lebanon’s Hezbollah dealt a heavy blow to the armed-to-the-teeth Israeli army.

Hezbollah fighters destroyed several Israeli Merkava tanks during the war.

Since then, Israel has been seeking to upgrade its military system, hinting that a new more devastating offensive than the 2006 war may await Lebanon.
