Islamic Artwork on pavement spark tensions in France

Calligraphic verses from the Noble Qur’an and Hadith of Prophet Mohammed (S.A.W.S) on a pavement sparks furor in French Muslim youths.

It allowed people to walk on the Holy verses of Qu’ran. It was actually an artwork called ‘Technologia’ by Mounir Fatmi, which contain projecting of video images on the Pont-Neuf bridge’s pavement in France.

It was planned to put cordons in place to insure the projections could not be walked on, but accidentally started on Tuesday night without installing any.

The Vice President of the Toulouse Muslim Association Mr. Hassan Idmiloud, told that “This was essentially one big misunderstanding,” quoted FRANCE 24 on Friday, October 5.

When the news of this incident spread across the city, Muslims gathered on the bridge to stop people walking on the images. However the local Imam and Muslim scholars went to the spot and appealed for calm.

“Young people saw the projections and thought they were a deliberate insult,” said Idmilud which was later switched off after meetings with the mayor.

Hassan Idmiloud and others stepped in to explain that this beautiful work of art was actually an homage to Islam, that it was a genuine mistake to project it on Wednesday before a cordon was in place.

Despite the intervention of the city’s Muslim leaders, Mounir Fatmi, who describes himself as “a Moroccan of Muslim origin”, decided to cancel the projection of his work on the Pont Neuf.
