Khaled Al-Saqaby, a family therapist from Saudi Arabia has issued some advice to other Muslim men on the ‘correct way’ to ‘discipline their wives’.
The video which surfaced on the Social media, urges men not to physically abuse their wives but pursue three courses of action if they need to be ‘disciplined’.
Though he admitted in the footage, which was released earlier this year, that it is a ‘thorny’ issue, he said: ‘Allah willing, we will cross this bridge safely’.
Al-Saqaby goes on to claim that wives ‘undoubtedly’ cause problems because many ‘want to live a life of equality with their husbands’.
“I believe the problem arises when husbands do not understand how to deal with disobedience.
“Some women disobey their husbands and make mistakes with them, and their husband think this is due to inadequate treatment,” “Sometimes women make mistakes that might lead her husband to beat her. I’m sad to say that there are some women who say: “Go ahead. If you are a real man, beat me”, he said.
According to him the first step to bring discipline your wives is to remind her of your rights and of her duties according to Allah.
Even if she remains unchanged then second step is forsaking her in bed.’ Al-Saqaby further explained how “men should remain sharing a bed with their wives but turn their back on them, rather than one of the couple sleeping in a different room or on the floor.
The third step, beating, has to correspond with the ‘necessary Islamic conditions’ before taking action.
‘The beating should not be performed with a rod, nor should it be a headband or a sharp object’.
Instead, husbands should use a tooth-cleaning twig ‘Miswaak’ or with a handkerchief’ to beat their wife.
Hopefully then, the wife will ‘feel that she was wrong in the way she treated her husband.’
