Beirut, Lebanon: The Islamic State group claimed twin attacks in Tehran on Wednesday targeting parliament and the shrine of revolutionary founder Ruhollah Khomeini, the first it has carried out in Iran.
“Fighters from the Islamic State attacked the Khomeini mausoleum and the parliament building in Tehran,” the the Amaq propaganda agency said agency said, citing a “security source.”
“The two martyrdom operatives blew themselves up inside the Khomeini mausoleum in the centre of Tehran,” the “security source” added.
The claim was circulated on social media accounts sympathetic to the jihadist group, which is currently under attack in its two major strongholds, Raqa in Syria and Mosul in Iraq.
At least three people were killed in the coordinated mid-morning attacks in the Iranian capital.
