Ishrat’s sister recalls the trauma

Hyderabad, November 01: Masarrat Jahan, the younger sister of Ishrat Jahan who was killed in a fake police encounter in Gujarat in 2004, said that her sister might not have lost her life had she not been a Muslim.

Speaking about the murder of Ishrat on trumped up charges, she said that her family suffered untold miseries and ignominy following the death of her death. She was speaking at a function, `Ishrat ki Kahani, Masarrat ki Zubani’ (Story of Ishrat by Masarrat), organized by Siasat Urdu daily where hundreds of people had gathered to listen to the heart-wrenching episode that had shaken the nation.

A magisterial inquiry pronounced the death of Ishrat about two months ago as murder by police officers.

Siasat editor Zahid Ali Khan presented two cheques of Rs 1.50 lakh and over Rs. 43,000 each to Masarrat Jahan. The money had been raised by Siasat Millat Relief Fund from contributions from common Hyderabadis. Notes journalist Zafar Agha and Maulana Naseeruddin also spoke on the occasion.
