Apple Co-founder Steve Wozniak perception on India is no different than its reality!
Steve Wozniak, the man who engineered the first home computer with a keyboard and also a co-founder of Apple was recently interviewed at the ET Global Business Summit in New Delhi.
Steve is also known as Woz, a friend to Steve Jobs, both worked hard to make Apple to what it is today.
When Woz was asked about his views on India, his candid reply outraged the Indian educated society. He told he doesn’t see creativity in India and success here has a lot more different meaning than any other country.
Speaking of Indian culture, he said success in India is completely “based upon academic excellence, studying, learning, practising and having a good job and a great life – For upper India, not the lower. I see two Indians. That’s a lot like Singapore study, study, work hard and you get an MBA, you will have a Mercedes but where is the creativity? The creativity gets left out when your behaviour is too predictable and structured, everyone is similar. Look at a small country like New Zealand, the writers, singers, athletes, it’s a whole different world.”
Now what wrong did he say about the missing “creativity” in our education system? Renowned author Ujjwal Patni shed some light on Woz statements.
The author says the success parameter in India is actually restricted to studying and finally ending with a Mercedes, while other countries prepare their children to survive on their own starting from school. Here in India young toddlers are made to write anything numerous times in order to learn when other nations don’t subject their toddlers or kindergarten students to such hard work.

Rather they push them to use their creativity from such a tender age that by the time the child reaches the adolescent age he is already prepped to face the world’s challenges even if he decides to discontinue his education. Now that was what Woz was referring to.
Not all American’s have university degrees, but the most famous and influential entrepreneurs in the world are the college drop-outs earning billions now and that dear friend they think out of the box. They were not restricted to the societies norms of education but they used their creativity to rise above all and mark their names on the globe.
Michael Dell, Steve Jobs, Bill Gates and Mark Zuckerberg, and many more all are now having companies worth Billions of money.
On the other hand, our education system only manufactures robots who are built in a certain way that they become useless when they are forced to do something which they have not been taught.
The students are not allowed to write different answers from what they have been taught by their teachers. Their creativity is being crushed at a very tender age. The teachers or faculties that usually teach English have no idea about the basic grammar of English. The personality development coach is not capable enough to turn a low-level performer into a confident young adult.
Each year, thousands of student graduate from many varsities but these graduated youth remain unemployed because they can’t speak in English or write a simple application letter though they study in English medium schools. The youth can’t write in shorthand or don’t even know how to fill in a cheque or a DD.
Now is the high time when we need to realize how wrong we are bringing up our children subjecting them to idle robots that can do nothing without any
command.
India is on the verge of mass producing – ‘Educated-unemployable’ youths who can not earn a living without their parents assistance or without someone’s reference.
]Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, Pepsico SEO Indira Nooyi reached success, not in India but could achieve their dreams by thinking out of the box in foreign countries.
This is the irony of India which is proud of these successful Indian-origin entrepreneurs but cant produce such masters in this Indian environment.
