Kurdish forces in northern Iraq have finally taken over parts of the country’s largest dam which was captured by the Islamic State militants earlier this month, say Kurdish officials.
Kurdish forces were supported by the United States airstrikes to take custody over Mosul dam yesterday, reports the BBC.
According to Kurdish officials, clearing traps and mines around the dam would still take many hours.
The Mosul dam had been seized by IS militants on August 7.
The dam is of strategic importance since it provides water and electricity in northern Iraq. It was feared that the militants could use the dam to flood areas downstream.
The Islamic State has seized large swathes of Iraq and Syria over the past few months. (ANI)
