‘Iran’s Armed Forces cripple invaders’

Tehran, February 03: A top Iranian military commander says the Armed Forces of the Islamic Republic will “cripple” intruders in case of any possible attack against the country’s sovereignty.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran’s Armed Forces, in particular the Ground Forces, are fully prepared and should a threat emerge, these forces will defend Iran’s sovereignty powerfully … and will cripple the enemy,” IRNA quoted Commander of the Iranian Army’s Ground Forces Brigadier General Ahmad Reza Pourdastan as saying on Wednesday.

He said that the main strategy of the Armed Forces is to get highly prepared according to various forms of threats.

“Previously, we faced threats of classic type … but after the September 11 incident, the climate of threats has changed and now we are facing what is called an unbalanced atmosphere,” General Pourdastan added.

The US and its Western allies have accused Iran of pursuing secret military work under the guise of a peaceful nuclear program, a claim vehemently rejected by Tehran. The Islamic Republic, however, says its nuclear work is solely for peaceful purposes.

In its numerous reports on Iran’s nuclear work, the International Atomic Energy Agency has confirmed non-diversion of the country’s nuclear program.

Israel, which alleges that Iran’s nuclear program is a threat to its existence, has repeatedly threatened to destroy Iran’s nuclear facilities.

Last month, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called for “a credible military option against Iran” to force Tehran to end its nuclear energy program.

Tehran says any attack against its territory would be responded with a crushing response from the Islamic Republic.
