Tehran, April 04: Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has called on the United Nations Secretary General, Ban Ki-moon, to prevent the US and European countries from interfering in regional affairs.
“Time is ripe for the UN secretary general to play a historical and determining role in settling the ongoing issues in certain countries in the Middle East and North Africa based on understanding and dialogue and to prevent the repeat of a catastrophe in Iraq and Afghanistan,” said President Ahmadinejad in a telephone conversation with the UN chief.
He expressed concern over the ongoing events in the Middle East and North Africa and added that the UN Security Council is unable to manage regional developments “properly” due to the ill-intention of the United States and certain European countries.
The Iranian chief executive pointed out that the interference of the US and some Western states would only complicate the regional situation, stressing that Western governments are merely pursuing their own interests.
“The dual attitude of Western governments towards Bahrain and Libya and their silence on the atrocities of the Zionist regime (Israel) against the innocent Palestinian people indicate their contradictory approaches,” he went on to say.
President Ahmadinejad also expressed Iran’s readiness to play an active role to help ease problems in the region.
