Tehran, April 06: A senior member of the Iranian Parliament (Majlis) says the Islamic Republic is in pursuit of compensation for the damages inflicted by the eight-year Iraqi-imposed war on Iran in the 1980s.
“Iran is following up on the issue of claiming compensation from Iraq but the case is not currently in progress as we await the establishment of stability in Iraq,” Deputy Head of the National Security and Foreign Policy Commission of the Majlis Esmail Kowsari said on Tuesday.
The Iranian lawmaker added that the eight-year imposed war cost Baghdad some 1,000 billion dollars and emphasized that the issue hinges on suspense at the current juncture due to the ongoing situation in war-torn Iraq, Majlis news agency (ICANA) reported.
“However, the case cannot be ignored easily and will be seriously pursued after the establishment of a stable system in Iraq,” he pointed out.
Kowsari said after the establishment of an independent system in Iraq, the Islamic Republic will invite international organizations to determine the exact cost of damages from the Iraq war on Iran.
The imposed war began in 1980, a year after the victory of Iran’s Islamic Revolution, when Iraq, supported by world powers, invaded Iran by launching aerial and ground incursions into Iranian territories.
The Western support for Baghdad took the forms of economic and technological aid, military intelligence, the sale of dual-use and military equipment, and as for the US, direct conflict with Iranian forces.
The war drew to a close in August 1988, when Iran, in compliance with international laws, accepted the Resolution 598 of UN Security Council as the conflict had already claimed many innocent lives.
