Iran: LPG tanks operational at South Pars gas field

Tehran, September 28: An Iranian contractor has begun storing liquid Butane and propane gases in tanks recently built at phases 9 and 10 of Iran’s South Pars gas field.

The LPG storage tanks in phases 9 and 10 of the South Pars gas field have become operational after their compressor was launched, said Hamid-Reza Mahdavi, the head of the onshore department of the project’s contractor, OIEC.

“The stored LPG will be sent through a pipeline to the export wharf in order to be sent via LPG ships,” Mahdavi said.

He added that around $60 million were invested in building the four propane and Butane tanks.

Mahdavi went on to say that the refinery of the phases 9 and 10, built with a $3 billion investment, will begin operating next month.

Despite the fact that it possesses the world’s second-largest gas reserves, Iran has been slow in developing its oil industry due to UN and US sanctions.

The South Pars gas field is being jointly developed by Iran and Qatar. The Iranian share of the field is about 14 trillion cubic meters of gas, or about eight percent of the total world reserves, and more than 18 billion barrels of liquefied natural gas resources.
