Iran donates puppet to Spanish museum

Tehran, April 06: Iranian stage director Zahra Sabri has donated a traditional Iranian puppet to the museum of the Tolosa International Puppetry Center in Spain.

Sabri, who staged Earth and the Universe during the opening ceremony of the TOT Festival in Barcelona, offered a Pahlevan Kachal (Bald Hero) puppet to the Spanish museum.

“The museum of the Tolosa International Puppetry Center has an outstanding collection of puppets from different countries,” said Sabri.

“[Iranian stage director] Behrouz Gharibpour has also donated a puppet of Mobarak to the museum,” she added.

Bald Hero is a traditional hand puppet who loves money and uses every trick to get more money with the help of his naughty assistant, Mobarak.

Sabri also referred to her troupe’s performance of Earth and the Universe in Spain, saying that the show was well received by the audience, ISNA reported.

“We staged The Earth and the Universe in Tolosa after our performance in the Barcelona festival,” Sabri said, adding that their show was warmly welcomed in Tolosa.

“We had four performances in Barcelona and one in Tolosa,” she further explained.

Barcelona’s TOT Festival was held from March 18 to 27 at the city’s Poble Espanyol — Spanish Village to mark the World Puppetry Day on March 21.

Sabri’s Earth and the Universe is an adaptation of seven stories from Masnavi, six-volume book of poems by Persian poet, mystic and theologian Jalal ad-Din Mohammad Balkhi known as Mowlavi.

The book contains 424 stories and is considered one of the greatest works of both Islamic mysticism and Persian literature.

Sabri also held a workshop during TOT Festival introducing a book about Iranian theater and puppetry written by Poupak Azimpour.
