Tehran, September 09: Iranian security agents have arrested a prominent reformist and closed the offices of an opposition party probing abuse of those arrested in the country’s postelection crackdown.
Esmaeil Gerami Moghaddam, a spokesman for the National Confidence Party, says security agents sealed the party offices in Tehran on Tuesday. He says the agents confiscated documents concerning the party’s probe into the prisoner abuse allegations.
The party is led by Mahdi Karroubi, who ran against President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in the disputed June presidential election.
A top Karroubi aide, Morteza Alviri, says he has been detained during a raid on his home Tuesday.
He said over the phone: “I’m being taken away by security agents right now.”
