Iran to attend IPU meeting in Panama

Tehran, April 13: An Iranian parliamentary delegation is to leave for Panama on Wednesday to attend a meeting of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) in Panama City.

“The members of the Islamic Republic of Iran’s inter-parliamentary delegation are due in Panama tomorrow (Wednesday) for the annual IPU meeting,” Head of Iran’s Foreign Relations Committee Heshmatollah Falahatpisheh told Mehr news agency.

He said the Iranian delegates will actively participate in a committee which pursues international security, the role of parliaments and global developments.

The top lawmaker said the Iranian delegation is also scheduled to deliver a speech at the event to elaborate on Iran’s stances vis-à-vis different regional and global developments.

“The Iranian delegation will sit down for talks with Arab and other parliamentary unions on the sidelines of the event,” he said.

“Our policy is to defend the stances adopted by the Islamic Consultative Assembly (Iran’s Parliament) in recent months in support of liberation movements,” the legislator added.

He underlined the Iranian Parliament’s stances are defensible “under the UN Charter.”

“Therefore, what happens on the fringes of the conference will not be less important than the main agenda,” he said.

Members of the Iranian delegation have already met with Iran’s Parliament (Majlis) Speaker Ali Larijani for further coordination.

The IPU conference is to be held from Saturday to Thursday.
