IPL spot fixing case: It’s time for SC to convert observations into directions, says sports activist

With the Supreme Court lashing out at suspended Board Of Control for Cricket In India (BCCI) chief N. Srinivasan for conflict of interest and questioning whether he could own a team in the Indian Premier League (IPL), sports activist Rahul Mehra on Monday said its time that the apex court should now convert its observations into directions.

“Does the Supreme Court believe that the people who are ruling the game of cricket, are people who have some ethics, morality left in them? Obviously the answer is no. So if the court keeps asking them don’t kill the game, these are the people who are going to kill the game for their own selfish interest. The time has come that the court doesn’t allow golden opportunities after golden opportunities to squander away,” said Mehra.

“Now when the entire spot fixing and the betting has taken its dangerous proportions, it is for the Supreme Court to decide as to whether it will only continue to pass observations, which means absolutely nothing to a shameless body like BCCI and its officials or will it now walk an extra mile and not talk in terms of observations which mean nothing to BCCI but convert them into directions,” he added.

Mehra alleged that Srinivasan is the epitome and king of conflict of interest.

Earlier in the day, the Supreme Court pulled up Srinivasan for having conflict of interest as head of BCCI and as owner of an IPL team.

During a hearing on the Justice Mukul Mudgal Committee report which probed into the IPL spot-fixing scandal, a two-member special bench of the Supreme Court asked Srinivasan to address the question of conflict of interest as an official of IPL team Chennai Super Kings owned by him is found to be involved in betting.
