New Delhi, July 31 : The Institute of Peace and Conflict Studies organised a condolence meeting in honour of Professor P.R. Chari who passed away earlier this week at the age of 79.
It was attended by his former colleagues of the Indian Administrative Service, his batchmates from the Indian Foreign Service, strategic thinkers and close relatives.
Messages were received on the occasion from Professor Stephen Cohen, of the Brookings Institute of the USA, Professor Kanti P. Bajpai of the National University of Singapore Ambassadors Teresita and Howard Schaffer of the US, Professor Pervez Iqbal Cheema of the National Defence University of Pakistan, Dr Jabin T. Jacob of the Insititue of Chinese Studies, Michael Krepon, co-founder of the Stimson Centre, and his Indian Foreign Service colleages including Ambassadors Salman Haidar, T.P. Sreenivasan, and Sudhir Devare , among others.
Ambassador Salman Haider recalled that under his stewardship, Institute of Defence Studies and Analysis, added greatly to it standing .
Eventually , after prematurely retiring from service, P.R. Chari founded the Institute of Peace and Conflict Studies along with Major General (Retd) Dipankar Banerjee.
Dipankar Banerjee pointed out that with financial resources sometimes one fiftieth of comparable institutes in India or around the world , the IPCS was adjudged a leader in various categories by international agencies.
P.R. Chari guided young minds and nurtured them and hundreds of scholars passed through the Institute.
Among the relatives present at the meeting were his wife, Chandra Chari, a scholar herself, Professor Vyjayanti Raghavan, and noted Journalist T.C.A.S. Raghavan, his daughters Divya Chari and Anusha Chari, scholars of the IPCS and distinguished members of the India International Centre. (ANI)
