Mohali: Hailing his side’s historic six-run win over table toppers West Indies in their last league game of the World Twenty20 in Nagpur, Afghanistan coach Inzamam-ul-Haq on Sunday called for more opportunities so that the minnows could prosper as an international team in the future.
“This is definitely a big victory for us. This also indicates that the team can do much better if given more opportunities against big nations,” said Inzamam told reporters while addressing a post-match press conference here.
Afghanistan made 123 for seven in their stipulated 20 overs before restricting West Indies to 117-8, handing the Group 1 leaders their first defeat in four matches.
The former Pakistan skipper believes that his side are talented and passionate, and would have performed much better had they clicked collectively in the T20 format’s pinnacle event.
“Although our batsmen are really talented, we were not able to click as a unit collectively. We would have been in a much better position if that was not the case,” added Inzamam.
Afghanistan advanced to the Super 10 stage after beating Scotland, Hong Kong and Zimbabwe and produced spirited performances against defending champions Sri Lanka, England and South Africa despite losing against them in the tournament.
