Hyderabad: An unidentified man entered the women’s washroom on Osmania University campus brandishing a knife and threatened and misbehaved with a B.Tech student in the wee hours of Thursday.
Police said the girl student was in the washroom at around 3.10 am when the intruder lunged at her. He had scaled the walls of the premises to get inside.
Inspector S Rajashekar Reddy said the block where the incident took place is allocated for engineering students in the university. The victim, a 21-year-old final year student, had gone to the washroom on the first floor late at night.
She told the police that she heard the man’s voice and locked herself inside the washroom, but he scaled the wall and jumped inside.
He misbehaved with the girl and flashed a knife at her to keep her from raising an alarm. Other hostel mates, who heard the commotion and rushed towards the bathroom, were also threatened with the knife, police said.
The man escaped after picking up a mobile phone from a room nearby, which was later found in a damaged condition near the compound wall. Police reached the spot with CLUES Team and the dog squad to collect evidence and record the students’ statements.
“We have gained access to footage from CC cameras but they only cover the area around the gate. We are also working on other clues at hand,” inspector Reddy said.
Speaking to siasat.com, Pravalika, a PhD scholar at Osmania University, said that the compound wall at the back of the campus is short and is often crossed over by local residents of Adikmet.
“People scale the wall and use the route as a shortcut,” she said. Based on a complaint from the victim, cases were booked under Section 457, 380, 354 and 506 of IPC. Investigations are on in the incident.
