International Yoga Day: China’s Wuxi hosts 3,500 yoga lovers

Wuxi (China) : The Consulate General of India in Shanghai along with Wuxi Municipal People’s Government on Sunday organised the second in the nine city celebrations of the second International Day of Yoga in Eastern China Region of Wuxi.

The second International Yoga Day celebration was hosted at the iconic Wuxi Hollywood Studios and nearly 3,500 yoga lovers from Wuxi registered and participated in the Yoga celebrations, said an official statement.

In his inaugural address at the event, Wuxi CCPIT chairperson Xu Huijuan welcomed the introduction of yoga culture into Wuxi.

She recalled that earlier in March 2016, Wuxi had also hosted the India Culture Week and hoped that yoga, given its large following in Wuxi, had the potential to promote values of harmony and peace between India and China.

The Consulate General of India, Shanghai, through local resources also arranged a Chinese speaking Indian yoga teacher, who conducted the yoga session for the nearly 1,000 practitioners based on the Common Yoga Protocol sent by the Department of AYUSH, the statement said.

The event was extremely well received by the yoga follower community in Wuxi, with leaders from Jiangsu Sports Bureau, Yan Zhengming, DDG, Vice Chairman of Wuxi NPC, Cao Xi Run and Wang Jinjian, Vice Mayor of Wuxi city, all joining in at the inaugural ceremony.

A special publication chronicling the global celebrations of last year’s International Day of Yoga from nearly 192 countries in the world was also presented to Wuxi city leadership by the Consul General of India in Shanghai.

In the Eastern China region of Shanghai, Zhejiang and Jiangsu, the second International Day of Yoga celebrations are being organised by CGI Shanghai from June 18 till June 26, one day each across nine cities, with theme of “Nine cities, Nine Days, Bringing together 9000 Yoga Lovers closer to India”!

Yesterday, it was held in Wenzhou with thousand yoga lovers practicing yoga amidst heavy rains. Today, it was celebrated in Wuxi and subsequently it will be held in Zhenjian, Shanghai, Taizhou , Yiwu, Shaoxing, Yangzhou and Ningbo till June 26.

The United Nations General Assembly had declared June 21 as the International Yoga Day on December 11, 2014. (ANI)
