Saana, April 06: Tens of thousands of anti-regime protesters rallied for the fourth day today in the southern Yemeni city of Taiz, as police shot dead a person and wounded 30 others amid mounting international pressure on President Ali Abdullah Saleh to step down immediately.
While one person was shot dead in Taiz, Al-Jazeera said four people were killed in Saana as Washington called for a negotiated transition of power “as quickly as possible”.
With the death toll in three days of violence climbing to 24, strongly worded statements also came from UN, European Union and the Arab nations for a negotiated settlement at the earliest.
The deaths came as both President Saleh and opposition accepted a proposal by Gulf states to mediate on demands for Saleh, in power for 32 years, to resign.
