Hyderabad, August 30: Increasing number of Muslim customers at Rahen centres and their conversation with Rahen centres owners is quite thought provoking. The crowd of burqa clad women doesn’t seem to come to an end. They come to Rahen centres as if they are coming to a ration shop or medical hall. Giving a furtive around them look they take out and hand over some gold or silver from their pocket to the Rahen centre owner and taking some money in exchange to it, get their way. Most of the women come along with their husband or son. What do they have to keep as Rahen? Nothing but a tola of gold jewellery or one or two silver ornaments which they get at the time of marriage, which are often used to keep on Rahen rather than wearing them. They live in rental house and if have an auto that will be on finance. If their houses are searched the most expensive thing will only be the white ration card.
To talk about Rahen centres there are a few slum areas where the Rahen centres are in abundance. It would not be inappropriate to say that these Rahen centres owners who are mostly belong to Rajashtan, Chattisgarh and are from Marvadi community are sucking the blood of poor people. Our innocent women don’t even know how much interest these Rahen centres are collecting from them?
When asked to a woman who was returning from the Rahen centre after borrowing money on Rahen, the reason for borrowing money, she said she had kept the jewellery on Rahen for Eid preparation, “when I will get money I will collect my jewellery back” she said. When asked on how much rate of interest she had borrowed the money she expressed her lack of knowledge.
Did we ever think about what brings our mothers and daughters to the Rahen centres. We know that by the Grace of Almighty there are so many affluent people in our city itself who can sponsor the poor people in their locality through zakat money. Just think for a moment about our social responsibility; just ponder over the fact that how many poor people are there who buy happiness of Eid by getting money on interest.
