Kannur, October 15: An inter-state fake credit card racket duping jewellers and textile shops of goods worth lakhs of rupees was busted by police today with the arrest of six persons, including five from Maharashtra.
The six were arrested here today by a police team led by IG Tomin Thachankary, investigating the case of purchase of Rs 2.5 lakh worth of ornaments from a jewellery shop here using forged cards recently, police said.
Sophisticated devices used for forging cards like embossing machine, electronic skimmer device and laptops were seized from the Thane-based gang, Thachankary told reporters.
Their modus operandi was to extract information from genuine cards using electronic devices and then forge those cards. They would then make purchase of gold ornaments and textiles using these cards.
Some of the gang members were adept in duping shop owners by their looks and their ability to converse in fluent Hindi and English, police said.
The gang is suspected to be behind some of the recent credit card cheating cases reported from Mumbai, Bangalore and different towns in Tamil Nadu.
Five of the arrested hail from Thane while another belongs to Uduma in Kasargode district of Kerala.
