Insurance drive to rein Motorist from May 6 to 15

For an on-the-spot insurance drive in the city, the Cyberabad police and insurance officials armed with a database of uninsured vehicles are going to hit the roads between May 1 and 15.

According to an official about 100 counters will be set up in Cyberabad limits, where vehicle owners can get their vehicle insured instantly.

The Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDA) and Insurance Information Bureau (IIB) are teaming up with the Cyberabad police for the motor vehicles insurance awareness campaign launched in Hyderabad on Wednesday.

In Greater Hyderabad, about 1,036 deaths occurred in 2013 raising concerns about road safety. When an uninsured vehicle is involved in an accident, giving relief becomes difficult,” said R Raghavan, chief executive officer of IIB, explaining the motto behind the campaign.

“We can’t bring in a change just by fining the motorists”. It is difficult for the transport department to track each and and every uninsured vehicle. Therefore this joint initiative of motor vehicle awareness campaign has been initiated to make vehicle owners realise the importance of vehicle insurance,” said T Raghunath, joint transport commissioner, Hyderabad.

The database of uninsured vehicles has been created by mapping the motor policy data of IIB with the registered vehicles data of Regional Transport Office (RTO) in the Cyberabad Police Commissionerate limits.
“The database of uninsured vehicles is a big step forward in achieving this aim,” pointed out Lalit Kumar, financial advisor of IRDA.
