Injury blow to key Indian woman footballer

India women’s football team today suffered a setback during a goalless draw against Nepal at the 12th South Asian Games with injury blow to their leading scorer Grace Dangmei.

Grace might miss India’s decisive group league encounter against Bangladesh.

The centre forward, who struck a double in their 5-0 hammering of Sri Lanka, had to be stretchered off the field after she slipped while trying to shoot in the 33rd minute. Grace was replaced by Bala Devi in the match.

“She’s hospitalised and we’re yet to get an update on her. I’m yet to ascertain the nature of the injury but we won’t take any chances,” head coach of Indian women team Sajid Dar said.

“Her injury at the halfway mark further dented our chances in the match as it was yet another unlucky result for us. Both the teams had 50-50 chances but again we could not find the target. We will have to go all out against Bangladesh now,” the coach added.

Defending champions India (five points) face Bangladesh (six) on Saturday in what will be the last match for both the nations to decide which team will face Nepal in the summit clash on February 15.
