Injunction filed with Thai court to prevent Saudi woman’s deportation: lawyer

Bangkok: An injunction has been filed at Bangkok’s Criminal Court to prevent a Saudi woman held in Thailand’s airport from being deported, a lawyer said Monday.

“When we suspect that someone might be illegally detained, we request for the court to call the relevant authorities (in) for questioning,” said human rights lawyer Nadthasiri Bergman, adding that she was awaiting the court’s decision.

A Saudi woman being held at Bangkok airport on Monday appealed for asylum and for other passengers to help protest her looming deportation, in desperate tweets from the hotel room where she barricaded herself.

The 18-year-old said she was stopped by Saudi and Kuwaiti officials when she arrived at Suvarnabhumi airport and her travel document was forcibly taken from her, a claim backed by Human Rights Watch.
