Infertility Medicine Issue: Congress Demands Action Against Ramdev

DEHRADUN: Congress today asked the Centre to take legal action against Yoga guru Ramdev in the wake of an inquiry committee report “not favouring” the controversial infertility medicine manufactured by his Patanjali pharmacy.

“The Centre had sought a report on the fertility drug from the state government, which has done its job. Now, it is up to the Centre to initiate immediate legal action against the manufacturer on the basis of the report furnished by the state government,” Uttarakhand Pradesh Congress Committee president Kishore Upadhyay said.

Uttarakhand government had formed a three-member committee last year to probe ‘Putrajeevak Beej’, an ayurvedic product which allegedly promises a male child. The committee recently submitted its report to the state government which was “not in favour” of the Yoga guru.

Arguing that there cannot be two sets of rules, one for ordinary citizens and other for VIPs, Mr Upadhyay said sparing the Yoga guru in the case will send a wrong message to people.

“Had a common man been involved in such violation, the Centre would definitely have taken action. Then why not in his case?” Mr Upadhyay said.

The product courted controversy when on May 1 last year, Rajya Sabha lawmakers led by JD(U)’s KC Tyagi demanded a ban on it and sought stringent action against the manufacturer.

The Centre had then directed the Uttarakhand government to launch an inquiry into the matter.
