Infant undergoes rare liver transplant at Apollo

Hyderabad: A six-and-a-half month old infant underwent a rare liver transplant at the Apollo Hospital in Hyderabad. The liver transplant was conducted by a team of doctors led by Manish C Verma, chief transplant surgeon at the hospital. The infant was suffering from a rare disease called Biliary atresia. The transplant was carried out using a slice of the liver of Nitesh’s father. The baby has been discharged and is healthy. Nitesh was weighing 5.5 kg at the time of surgery; usually the surgery is not performed on the babies with less than 10 Kgs of weight.

The baby had developed jaundice just a few weeks after his birth. His parents first consulted local doctors then got him to Apollo Hospital, where he was diagnosed with severe jaundice. The transplant was carried out on October 13 2016.

Baby’s father is a daily wage earner. 10 lakh was provided from Chief Ministers Relief Fund, 3 lakh from PM Relief Fund while actor Allu Arjun donated Rs 8 lakh for the surgery.
