Indonesia plane crash: President Widodo calls for ‘fundamental overhaul’ of military weaponry

Indonesia President Joko Widodo has called for a ‘fundamental overhaul’ of the management of military weaponry in the country in the wake of a military plane crash that killed 140 people onboard.

President Widodo said that the country could no longer simply buy weapons but should focus on modernising the weapon systems too, ABC News reported.

The statement came shortly after Indonesia’s Air Force chief Air Marshal Agus Supriatna stated that he expected no survivors from the C-130 plane that crashed on Tuesday.

The Air Force had initially claimed that there were 12 crew members on the plane but the total number of people onboard has been repeatedly raised since then, signalling lax controls and raising questions about whether the military plane was accepting passengers.

Hitching rides on military planes to reach remote destinations is reportedly a common practice in Indonesia. (ANI)
