Indonesia: Mass grave dug for victims of the earthquake and tsunami

Indonesia began burying bodies in a vast mass grave, victims of a natural disaster which claimed almost 1300 lives. Volunteers have helped to dig a mass grave at Poboya in the hills above the devastated seaside city of Palu with space for up to 1,300 victims.

Local media is reporting that it is a temporary measure, and the victims will be given “proper burials” at a later date. Authorities are desperate to stave off any disease outbreak caused by decomposing bodies. The earthquake measured 7.5 on the Richter scale, levelling buildings, causing landslides and destroying roads. It triggered a tsunami with waves measuring up to 6m (20ft) high.

The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs warned that there were about 46,000 children and 14,000 elderly Indonesians among those in dire need, many in areas that aren’t the focus of government recovery efforts.

After this catastrophe countries such as Turkey, Thailand and Australia have offered to help to which President Joko Widodo agreed to accept international help.
