Indian sailor held in Taiwan

New Delhi, August 04: In a bizarre case of prosecution without evidence, an Indian sailor has been held in captivity in Taiwan for an incident that he claims never happened.

Captain Glen Patrick Aroza has been illegally detained for nearly four months now. He has been accused of damaging a Taiwanese trawler with his Japanese ship MV Tosa.

The ship was going to Singapore from Japan via Taiwan. It was in the high seas, the international waters, when the so called mishap happened.

The incident happened on April 17 and the fishing trawler apparently capsized. But according to the sailor, the mishap never happened.

Ironically, despite any proof, the captain has been charged with manslaughter. His case will come up for hearing on August 20.

Back in Mangalore, his wife Preetha Aroza is fighting for the captain’s release. An anxious family has now demanded government intervention.
