Hyderabad: Stuck with very little food and water for 28 days on the waters of UAE, Captain Ayyappan Swaminathan shall be returning home after experiencing an unfortunate chain of events that left him and his 9 companions stranded on a ship.
Captain Swaminathan and 9 others on MV Azraqmoiah were left stranded on a ship off Ajman in UAE with neither salary nor requisite papers to leave for shore after the ship’s owners ran into financial rough weather.
The captain and two other crew were able to leave the ship on June 9 after their dues were settled. Earlier, on April 22, seven crewmen (6 Indians, including 2 from AP, & one Tanzanian) had been able to leave the ship for home.
The men’s ordeal came to light after the men took to twitter to address their plight.
The Federal Transport Authority (UAE) and London-based Human Rights at Sea as well as The Mission to Seafarers looked into the issue finally paving way for the captain to return to his homeland.
