The Indian Merchants Chamber Hall, location of the Indo American Society in Mumbai, has seen many past and present Presidents and Prime Ministers of India including Mrs Indira Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, Manmohan Singh and Abdul Kalam deliver memorable lectures.
Recently, the society got eminent Indian American heart surgeon, Dr Mukesh Hariawala, to present his pioneering work on Angiogenesis.
Angiogenesis is a novel cellular therapy of establishing natural bypass blood vessels on the heart by injecting growth factors that are extracted from tissue or genetically engineered. This can be delivered by injection in the heart during surgery or peripherally which stimulates birth of new blood vessels.
These micro arteries are capable of supplying rich oxygenated blood and relieve chest pain symptoms following or prior to heart attack that could potentially save lives of many patients. This therapy is undergoing clinical trials in the US and would soon be available for patients in India.
