New Delhi: According to data released by Foreign Agricultural Services/US Department of Agriculture, India along with Brazil remained top global exporter of beef during the year 2016.

Since the Modi govt came to power India became world’s largest beef supplier . In 2015 India was declared world’s top beef exporter and in 2016 it continued to retain its number position in beef export.

In the given year India exported 1850 metric tons of carabeef (buffalo meat). While there is widespread confusion regarding the definition of beef in India, the US Department of Agriculture classifies buffalo meat as beef.

India, Brazil, United States and Australia make for about 66% of global beef export while China is the leading global importer of beef followed by Japan, Russia and South Korea.

In the financial year 2015-16 India’s total earning from buffalo meat export was 26,682 Crore Rupees.

India’s position as world’s top buffalo meat exporter is ironic considering that buffalo slaughter (along with cow slaughter) is banned by law in at least four Indian states/UTs (Chandigarh, Chhattisgarh, Himachal Pradesh and Jammu & Kashmir).

Any violation of the ban attracts heavy punishment and penalty.

In Chhattisgarh slaughter/possession of buffalo meat or transport/export to other states attracts a punishment of 7 years of jail times, fine up to 50,000 rupees. In Himachal Pradesh slaughter of all bovines is punishable by 5 year sentence while in Jammu and Kashmir killing of he or she buffalo entails a penalty five times the animal’s price.
