India with Nepal in this hour of distress: President Mukherjee

President Pranab Mukherjee on Thursday accepted the credentials of Nepal Ambassador Deep Kumar Upadhyay at a ceremony in the Rashtrapati Bhavan, assuring the envoy that New Delhi will do ‘whatever possible’ to help the people of his country, in wake of the massive earthquake that devastated the Himalayan nation.

According to a press release by the Rashtrapati Bhavan, President Mukherjee said that Upadhyay is assuming office at a difficult time for his country, noting that the earthquake has uprooted a large number of people with huge casualties

President Mukherjee further said India extended its hand of co-operation as soon as it got to know about the earthquake, adding that the entire country hopes for life in Nepal to return to normalcy.

Responding to the President’s sentiments, Upadhyay said that Nepal is struggling to come to terms with the devastation, adding that the support and sympathy of India is a great source of strength for his country.

Saturday’s earthquake, which measured 7.9 on the Richter scale, resulted in the deaths of over 5,200 people and was one of the worst calamities suffered by Nepal in over 80 years. (ANI)
