India to take up with Lanka attacks on TN fishermen: PC

Chennai, July 09: Centre today informed Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi that the External Affairs Ministry would take up with Sri Lankan Government the issue of attacks on the state’s fishermen allegedly by Lankan Navy.

Responding to Karunanidhi’s letter yesterday on recent killing of a fisherman allegedly by Lankan Navy, Union Home Minister P Chidambaram said he had discussed the issue with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

In a letter to Karunanidhi, a copy of which was released to media here, Chidambaram said he had also discussed the issue with National Security Advisor Shiv Shankar Menon.

“I understand that the Ministry of External Affairs will take up the matter with the Government of Sri Lanka,” he said.

Voicing concern over “continuing attacks” on Tamil Nadu fishermen, Karunanidhi had yesterday shot off a letter to the Prime Minister seeking his immediate intervention to put an end to such incidents.
