New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday welcomed Sri Lankan Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe on his maiden visit to India after winning the elections.
“We are deeply honoured that you have chosen India as your first overseas destination. It is a happy coincidence that your last full term as Sri Lanka’s prime minister coincided with the first National Democratic Alliance (NDA) Government,” said Prime Minister Modi in the joint statement.
“We thank you for your belief in and steadfast support for India-Sri Lanka relations,” he added.
Prime Minister Modi further said that he had had an excellent discussion on common development saying that the progress of Sri Lanka is in the interest of both neighbours.
“As a close neighbour, we wish Sri Lanka every success and assure you of India’s unwavering support. We would like to see our trade grow and become more stable with Sri Lanka,” he added.
