India, Pakistan meet on June 24

New Delhi, June 19: Foreign secretaries of India and Pakistan will meet in Islamabad on June 24 to discuss modalities for removing trust deficit.

According to media reports, foreign secretary Nirupama Rao is due in Islamabad a day before the meeting. She will be the seniormost Indian official to visit Pakistan since 26/11. Earlier scheduled for June 26, the visit was advanced by two days because the date clashed with Rao’s visit to Canada for the G-20 summit.

The meeting is preparatory to the foreign ministers’ talks on July 15 in Islamabad. The two secretaries are expected to discuss proposals for overcoming mistrust and reviving peace talks suspended since late 2008.

Prime ministers Manmohan Singh and Yousaf Raza Gilani had agreed in Thimphu (Bhutan) in April to restart the stalled peace process and tasked foreign ministers and secretaries to draw up a road map for re-engagement.
