India, Mozambique finalise MoU on cooperation in renewable energy: PM Modi

New Delhi, Aug. 5 : Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday said that upon meeting Mozambique President Filipe Jacinto Nyusi, the two nations have finalised a MoU on cooperation in Renewable Energy.

“I am delighted to welcome President Nyusi and his delegation to India. President Nyusi assumed office earlier this year. We are happy that India is his first destination in Asia,” Prime Minister Modi’s office tweeted.

“Africa and the Indian Ocean are among the highest priorities for our foreign policy. Mozambique is crucial for both. Our trade has multiplied five times in the last five years: PM on India-Mozambique ties,” it added.

“We spoke of our economic synergies and cooperation. We have finalised an MoU on Cooperation in Renewable Energy. This is an important area in our efforts towards sustainable development. I have discussed ways in which we can intensify cooperation in maritime security and ocean economy,” it said in a series of tweets.

The Prime Minister further said, “We greatly appreciate Mozambique’s support for India’s candidature for Permanent membership of an expanded UN Security Council.”

Mozambique President Filipe Jacinto Nyusi, who is currently in India for a five-day visit, was accorded the Guard of Honour at the Rashtrapati Bhavan earlier in the day.

A high-level delegation, including the Mozambican Ministers of Foreign Affairs, Minerals and Energy, Agriculture, Transportation and Communications and Interior, is accompanying the visiting President besides senior officials and a business delegation.

President Nyusi will meet his Indian counterpart Pranab Mukherjee and Vice-President Hamid Ansari during his visit.

President Nyusi, who is accompanied by his wife, will also visit Ahmedabad for a day. He was an alumnus of the Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Ahmedabad, where he completed a short duration course in 2003.

This will be the Mozambique President’s second visit as he had earlier visited India in 2011 as the Defence Minister. (ANI)
