India has given me life changing moments

Melbourne, June 21: Steve Waugh’s work for humanity has spread far and wide, but the former Australia captain traces its roots to India, a country which he says has changed his outlook towards life.

“India has given me some life changing moments right from 1986 when I played my first match on Indian soil,” says Waugh.

“I have memories of some unforgettable matches in India and meeting Mother Teresa here was a mesmerising experience which changed my outlook about a lot of things,” Waugh told PTI.

Waugh was in the capital recently to launch his global charity foundation in India, an initiative to take forward his long commitment to charity to countries outside Australia.

“Kolkata has been particularly special to me.

“Our two countries have always enjoyed excellent relations, especially through sports and business. The safety of any young person in a foreign country is of paramount importance,” Waugh has said on the incidents of the attacks.

About his Foundation in India, the former cricketer says it will work towards identification, treatment and cure of rare diseases primarily focusing on children.

The charismatic cricketer is also hopeful of roping in celebrities in future for his Foundation.

“I have thought about that aspect for the future.

There are many popular cricketing icons in India and they can go a long way in helping needy people.”

On the possibility of starring in Indian movies, Steve says he is sure he does’nt want to start a new innings with acting.

“I leave acting to Brett Lee, that’s not my cup of tea. Indian cricketers have had a taste of acting in films but I’m not that good at it.
