Bengaluru :India’s Test opener Murali Vijay on Thursday said his side is up for great 12 months ahead under newly-appointed coach Anil Kumble.
Vijay, who believes it is too early to comment on the partnership between Kumble and Test skipper Virat Kohli, asserted that his side would try to turn best in the upcoming months.
“I can’t see anything ahead of me and talk. A couple of day’s time it has been. So, it’s very early to give a comment on that.
But it’s going to be a great 12 months for us, that much I can guarantee you as a team. We are up for it and we want to be the best we can in these coming 12 months,” Vijay told the media on the sidelines of the national team’s camp in Bangalore.
Admitting that his side had a great time with former team director Ravi Shastri, Vijay said India is now looking forward to share some quality time with the new coach.
Shastri, who was the team director until the end of the World Twenty20 campaign, was among the frontrunners before Kumble was appointed as the new head coach for next one year by the BCCI’s cricket advisory committee, which included Sachin Tendulkar, Saurav Ganguly and VVS Laxman.
“We had a great time with Ravi bhai and now Anil bhai has picked up and hopefully we can have a good time with him and learn a lot of things from him because he has been an unbelievable cricketer for the Indian team,” he insisted.
Kumble’s first assignment will commence in the Caribbean, where India will play a four-match Test series against the West Indies from July 21.
Reflecting on his strategy for the upcoming tour, the 32-year-old said his aim is to stick to basics and try to be consistent.
“I have been to West Indies three times before. So, obviously I have a fair bit of idea about how it’s going to be there. But we don’t know what’s going to be given to us on that particular Test match. So, we gotta be prepared overall as a unit because this is the start of our season. I’m looking forward to stick to my basics and be as consistent I can this season,”affirmed Vijay.(ANI)
