Binnaguri: India and Bhutan are commemorating the golden jubilee celebrations of formal diplomatic relations through the organisation of a sports fest from December 5 to December 7 in Binnaguri.
A Royal Bhutan Army team comprising 17 officers and 47 soldiers arrived in Binnaguri on December 4 for the fest.
The meet was inaugurated jointly by the Chief Guest, Colonel Sherub Dorji of the Royal Bhutan Army and Major General A Arun, the General Officer Commanding Kripan Division on Wednesday, according to an official statement issued by the Trishakti Corps, Sukna.
The ceremony saw a string of performances by the pipe bands of the Indian Army, who played the national anthems of both the nations. Bhangra and Janjh Patak, a martial dance from Maharashtra, were also performed at the ceremony on Wednesday.
The opening ceremony was followed by a basketball match between the teams representing India and Bhutan.
Furthermore, a football match, a golf tournament, and a 12-kilometer cross-country run have been scheduled as part of the three-day meet.
“Cultural programmes depicting the rich culture and heritage of India and Bhutan will also be showcased to include Bamboo Dance of Mizoram, ‘Chaila’ dance of Kumaon, Mallakhamb display from Maharashtra, Taekwondo and rendering of popular Bhutanese songs by Indian Army performers,” the press release issued by the Corps noted.
