India asks its envoy to meet hearing impaired woman stuck in Pakistan

New Delhi, Aug.3 : Indian External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj has reportedly directed the country’s High Commissioner, Dr. T C A Raghavan, to meet a hearing and speech-impaired Indian woman who has been stranded in Pakistan for at least 15 years.

The Dawn, citing Indian media reports, said, that Swaraj has instructed the Indian envoy and his wife to go to Karachi to meet the girl.

Swaraj used Twitter to respond to human rights activist Ansar Burney’s tweet asking the two governments to look for ways to reunite the woman with her family in India.

Burney, who will be in India in September to meet the Dalai Lama in Dharamsala, acknowledged the fresh effort to find the woman’s parents was because of the success of the Bollywood film Bajrangi Bhaijan in both countries.

Geeta now lives with Bilquis Edhi. This information has been independently verified by the Dawn.

She is aged between 22 to 24 and communicates through gestures, and at times cries a lot.

She apparently entered Lahore on a train from India almost 15 years ago. She was found by police and sent to a state-run shelter. (ANI with inputs)
