Income Tax Day celebrated

Hyderabad, July 25: For the first time in the history of Income Tax (IT) department, ‘Income Tax Day’ was celebrated today which coincides with the 150th year of the levy of Income Tax in the country.

It was on July 24, 1860 that IT was levied for the first time in the country and the IT Act was cleared by the then Governor General of India.

The majestic IT Towers at masab Tank was fully decked up for the ‘IT Day’ which was celebrated with much fanfare. The programme included release of citizens charter by AK Basu, Chief Commissioner of IT, Hyderabad, who traced the origin of IT department and the Act including various legislations and the original one of 1860s.

During that period, a total of Rs 11 lakh was collected by the IT department which runs into Rs 4 lakh crore today, Basu said.

Taxpayers including NMDC, Andhra Bank, SBH, Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Limited were among those felicitated on the occasion.

A documentary film on the department was screened on the occasion.
