Srinagar: There is no respite from the ongoing cold wave in Kashmir valley, as Srinagar continues to shiver in minus temperatures with night temperature recorded as minus 7.2 degrees Celsius.
The bone-chilling cold has resulted in the freezing of many water bodies as well as drinking water pipelines in many areas of the valley. “We have to burn firewood near the taps and pipelines to get water as all of the lines are frozen due to minus temperatures,” said Ghulam Rasool, a local resident.
The ongoing cold wave is expected to end from 2nd of February as the MeT department has predicted western disturbances hitting the valley from Feb-2.
Kashmir is currently under the grip of 40 days long harsh winter period “Chillai Kalan”. During this period the cold wave grips the valley and the temperature drops considerably resulting in the freezing of water bodies and drinking water pipelines in Kashmir.
Meanwhile, doctors here have advised people to move around carefully especially in the morning and evening hours as there are more chances of people slipping on slippery surfaces which can result in bone fractures.
