Illegal temples on Falaknuma Palace land

A temple constructed abutting Charminar has been at the root of recent troubles in Hyderabad. No doubt Charminar is our national heritage and the icon of Hyderabad hence we should try not to get this heritage building stained. But at the same time we need to focus on other historical monuments and heritage buildings too.

The historical Falaknuma Palace is located at a distance of 3 to 4 kms from Charminar. One of the most beautiful palaces of Hyderabad, Falaknuma Palace is spread over 32 acre land. It was built by Nawab Viqarul Umra who was the then prime minister of Hyderabad. The palace has a touch of English architecture. His Excellency Sir Viqarul Umra Bahadur laid the foundation stone of the palace on March 3, 1884. The palace was completed in 9 years duration and was of scorpion shape.

Sadly illegal temples have been emerged on the land of this beautiful palace too. The temple has not emerged out of the blue but has been expanded gradually. Initially puja of the stones began then the stones were white-washed and painted with saffron colour. Then a small temple was constructed and later expanded. Now even a big arch has been constructed on the road leading to the temple named Falaknuma Sri Malikarjuna Swami Mandir. It is being tried to give a formal shape to another temple very close to the big temple.

This has not been done overnight but the Muslim leadership turned blind eye to the construction of these temple, a process which took a long time to complete.
