I’ll kill my son myself

Mumbai, July 02: Locals claimed they nabbed 25-yr-old, and not the 19-yr-old arrested yesterday

Have the police got the right person? Or is there is more than one rapist-killer involved?

The confusion continues to prevail.

On the one hand, four Kurla residents — Musa Alam, Azal Rehmani, Afzal Usman and Sayyed Mohammed Ali — claimed last morning that they had helped nab a suspect and handed him over to the police. They claimed the man is around 25-30 years of age.

On the other hand, at a press conference, Commissioner of Police Sanjeev Dayal declared that a 19-year-old cable and Internet operator from Kurla as the criminal. He has been identified as Javed Rehman Sheikh.

One of Sheikh’s close friends, who was picked up from Nerul in Navi Mumbai yesterday, is presently being interrogated. However, the police did not provide any details about him.

The four men claimed they nabbed the youth as he bore a striking resemblance to the sketch of the suspect released by the police.

“We arrested some other man whose features were similar to the sketch shown by the police. He was around 25-30 years old but the cable operator whom the police have caught is very young,” said Musa Alam. “We had declared we would hand over the reward of Rs 2.5 lakh to the family of the nine-year-old whose body was
found last month.”

The police, however, were tightlipped about the other man arrested by the four locals.

After Home Minister RR Patil announced the reward to anyone helping in the serial killer’s arrest, there was a rush among locals to nab the suspect.

Arrested when?
However, confusion still reigns over when the suspect was arrested.

While the four men claimed they had nabbed the suspect on Tuesday morning, Dayal said that the 19-yr-old suspect’s DNA test had been conducted on June 23.

It takes at least a week’s time for the result of a DNA test to be declared.

Declining to specify when the 19-yr-old was arrested, Dayal said that traces of the victim’s blood sample were found in the suspect’s nails.

Despite the arrest of the suspect, the police have intensified patrolling on the streets of Nehru Nagar till late last evening.
